As seen during the Survey Corps' attack on Liberio, vertical maneuvering equipment can be worn alongside the anti-personnel vertical maneuvering equipment. This gives the wearer access to both ranged and close combat capabilities.[2]

The bladed anti-titan omni-directional mobility gear has been largely superseded by its anti-personnel counterpart in 854. In addition, a newer version with different scabbard position, lower blade count and different straps has entered service. Older gears are still in service with Cadet Corps members.[3]

There's currently 5 3DMG in this game and you start off with the First-Generation gear, which is the weakest. Higher generations has higher stats, and you can reinforce all of them to make them even better. Do not be afraid to buy the 2nd or 3rd generation gear, as they can help you get the 4th generation gear easier (unless you're confident and skilled with the 1st generation gear).
