The present invention relates to a method of and apparatus for measuring the mass flow of molten metal in a channel.
2. Description of the Related Art
It is known that, in metal production processes, molten metal is ejected from a spout of a pouring nozzle and flows in a channel. The metal flow rate (flow rate of molten metal per unit length of channel) affects the metal production process, so it is important to measure the metal flow rate accurately. Generally, however, no additional molten metal flows in a channel during the measurement of the metal flow rate by use of a flow meter.
However, the flow rate of molten metal ejected from a pouring nozzle is not constant. On the other hand, the flow rate of molten metal passing through a channel affects the flow rate of metal ejected from the pouring nozzle. For this reason, the metal flow rate cannot be accurately measured only by measuring the flow rate of molten metal passing through a channel. Therefore, there is a proposal in which a flow rate control valve is provided in the channel to discharge molten metal in the channel in accordance with the metal flow rate. The flow rate of metal in the channel is measured by measuring the flow rate of molten metal ejected from the pouring nozzle in accordance with the flow rate control valve.
Japanese Patent Unexamined Publication (Kokai) No. 63-264684 discloses a method of and apparatus for measuring the flow rate of molten metal in a channel. This technique involves: measuring a change in pressure in a pressure sensor such as a diaphragm, the change in pressure being caused by a change in flow rate of molten metal; and computing the flow rate of molten metal by the pressure sensor based on the measured change in pressure.
