Fulci's 1982 giallo, THE NEW YORK RIPPER (original title Lo squartatore di New York), is an ultra-sleazy slice of film-making in which the director takes his bloodshed and directs it almost exclusively towards women in an odyssey of misogyny and violence. It's a film that sees Lieutenant Williams (an American character played by British TV star Jack Hedley) on the trail of a mysterious killer targeting beautiful young women and slicing them up with knives and razors. There are ten million suspects in the city, so Lt. Williams has his work cut out on this one.Made at the tail-end of Fulci's gore period, THE NEW YORK RIPPER is a dark and sleazy work which takes violence to a new level; although I love his supernatural gore movies, this film's sexual violence crosses the line for me and I had to look away in some scenes. Aside from the violence, it does feel quite slimly-plotted, another film where the police do very little aside from providing a central protagonist character. The 'Donald Duck' voice adds an unintentionally hilarious aspect to the proceedings, so you're laughing one moment and repulsed the next, although Fulci would have done well to cut out the padded 'erotic' scenes, like the bit with the woman getting pleasured in a bar which seems to go on forever and adds nothing to the plot.
Lucio Fulci brings sleazy sex and over the top gore. The violence is nasty when it comes to cutting up female victims. The New York Ripper features a veteran New York cop Fred Williams, who is on the trail of a killer of beautiful women in New York. He also speaks like Donald Duck. One victim Fay Majors survives the attack. She and her boyfriend go into hiding but she is still being stalked. Majors identifies a man with two missing fingers as the potential ripper. This giallo sets out to shock. It was banned by the censors in Britain. The chief censor at the time, James Ferman an American was sensitive to extreme violence against women. As a thriller, Fulci offers some misdirection. As a slasher it is very misogynistic. As a movie it is so absurd with its duck voiced killer. The film has acquired a cult reputation. It is badly dubbed including the English actor who plays Williams. Fulci offers some moments of salacious levity. Williams is seen in bed with a beautiful young woman but she is a prostitute. There is a woman who gets off with voyeurism and masturbates. It all adds to the sleaziness.
This controversial slasher from Lucio Fulci is still censored in the U.K. to this day. It's a gruesome, excessive tale about a serial killer brutalizing women in New York City. While Fulci wanted to make a movie about American exorbitance, competitiveness, and misogyny, many audiences have been turned off by all the blood and sex depicted in the film.
In the movie, the killer turns out to be a man who loses it after his sick, young daughter is given a poor diagnosis in the hospital. Fulci is known for not holding back with violence, and this film is one of his most gratuitous.
Unfortunately, there's a crazed former performer stalking them. The man, who just escaped a mental hospital, locks the actors in the theater, taking them out one by one in showy and melodramatic ways. The killer also wears coveralls and a large owl mask throughout the movie, one that becomes more and more bloody as the bodies add up. 2b1af7f3a8
