At the launch of the SG in 1961, Gibson offered four variants of the SG; the SG Junior (a stripped-down version of the standard, analogous to the Les Paul Junior), the SG Special, the SG Standard, and the top-of-the-line SG Custom. I would guess that, as an AC/DC fan, he would prefer the finish on the standard. However, the special is also available in the glossy cherry finish for not much more than the special faded. It would better suit covered pickups if he ever wanted to upgrade to one of the suggestions above at a later date (I don't like the look of fadeds that I've seen which have been changed to include covered pickups). Also, the special's stock pickups have a more vintage sound than those of the standard so if he mostly plays albums that are pre-80s I believe that the special would suit the earlier AC/DC sound. What is really going to make the difference for an AC/DC tone is a valve amp like an Epiphone Valve Junior or some other such suitable valve amp. As a dad, you may prefer the Peavey Royal 8 Valve King which he can turn down a bit because it has separate gain and master controls. If you went for the special 'unfaded' you could spend some of what you saved against an SG standard on a decent amp which would be a much better bet for him. After 3 years I'd admitted defeat, saved up for what I'd always wanted and got a standard, All round better playability in my case.Worth saving up for- although the neck was the same dimensions it just felt more comfortable on the standard. I have owned a Gibson SG Standard and am a HUGE AC/DC fan, the look is definetly much closer to that of Angus' guitar and personally I would suggest purchasing the standard from Musiciansfriend.com. The guitar was in great condition and if any thing is wrong with it they replace it. They personally check the guitar before it leaves to ensure it is playable I don't follow rory, my standard's a regular old off the shelf standard, purchased in Maryland from the fine fellows at atomic music with all the case candy even though its second hand. my silver special is a regular old gison in a cool silver finish, purchased beat-to shit with all the lacquer worn off (as lacquer does versus poly) from the sam ash near Nashville... my sivler LP is an American platinum edition, purchased in seatlle. None of 'em made in china. My one Chinese Gibson-alike is the epi joe bonamassa thatw as an impulse by I have been regretting a little. Its an okay guitar, its just not that great and it was pretty expensive for what I got. I wish I ahd trid one in person. oh well. The angled string pull on a Gibson coupled with poorly cut string nuts are the SG's achiles heel... I still wouldn't ever part with my standard though! It is a great player and resonates so much better than any other current production full solidbody I own. It's by no means the perfect guitar, but it is my #1, the first choice in the bands that I write music for. Plays beautifully and was a natural fit for me the first time I picked it up. Not as warm as most LP's I've played, a little more on the aggressive side, just the way I like it. Mine is a 2012 limited edition in Honeyburst. Originally equipped with Burstbuckers, the bridge pickup has been replaced with a Wolfetone Marshallhead. Currently strung up with Dean Markley 13's, tuned to D standard, pots and caps replaced with CTS and Orange Drops respectively, and rewired to a 50's wiring scheme. purdy... the hallmark of a good SG is not being neck heavy, so Gibson didn't get it right with yours. I have an odler one and it sits fine even with a nylon strap. But I sifted through hundreds of standards and RIs for 3 years. My Gibson SG standard is the 120th-anniversary edition, which is why I have both this one and the 120th-anniversary one saved.
